Bash Brothers / Babysitter / DAD / Madonna Bangers

Crace Mountain, May 21, 2011

When Downtown Bobby Brown told me where this show was, I thought for sure it must be the kinda cool but dumpy house on the left, because there was no way anyone I knew lived in the awesome German Gingerbread looking house on the right, let alone was going to have landlord approved rock shows in its basement. Happily, I was wrong. Read about it here:

The Crowd

Attendance was sparse but intimate at the fledgling venue, some people were dancing and everyone seemed to be having fun. Mostly youngsters, but there were some (other) older folks as well. I was surprised to discover that a friend from Victoria was there, and that he was a big rock star as he's a member of Wolf Parade. So the stars were out, baby.

Stuff I Wrote When I Was Drunk

Well, I figured since I saw this show drunk, I might as well review it drunk. When I showed up, the Bash Brothers were smashing out an unbelievably awesome set of my favorite brand of Bash Brothers, the kind where they have Kristjanne on the drum kit and Lindsay on the bass and shit was like madness on drugs with facepaint and the bass was distorted like fuck and the drums were like holy fuckin shit and the vocals were maniacal screams and everything was so fuckin' fun I wished it would never end and anyways yeah they're one of my favorite bands ever. Then Babysitter came on and my friend Teenwolf Andy was in it and they made the basement a place you really wanted to stay and then the Madonna Bangers came up and the lead singer was in some kind of crazy gonch with messages about Jesus on them and he helped guide us into the rapture that was apparently about to happen but I'm not sure many of the audience members were going to qualify. By then I was really drunk on the beers and shit stopped making toooo much sense and we had to go home because we have kids and we're not allowed out too late.

The Next Day

As you can see, a good time was had by all. Well, all of me, anyway. To sum up: Bash Brothers are awesome. Babysitter was great. Madonna Bangers are crazy. And in there before the Madonna Bangers was someone who made some very cool ambient sounds that reminded me of some of the better Dixie's Death Pool shows I have seen, but I was upstairs using the bathroom and talking about building houses out of mud for pretty much the whole set.

Later the Next Day

After the hangover - well, part way through – I looked around on the google machine and found out what I had actually been told a couple of times already. The artist who played before the Madonna Bangers is called DAD. Very cool sound collage. Listening to the first couple of tracks from the free download, I'm lulled into a trance and taken on a magic carpet ride that resembles the psychedelic boat trip from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory with an in flight screening of 2001: A Space Odyssey. It's a good thing.

Ok, Seriously, I'm Just About Finished Here

I just have to add that Crace Mountain is a great venue, and I'm really glad that it is happening, but the sound was pretty bad and that will really need some attention. I don't usually bitch about these sorts of things but it was pretty serious. That said, I had a super fun time. Obviously. Ok, I'm done.
